I'll be teaching an upcoming class at GAC. Hands in Clay will begin next week and is sure to be lots of fun. All ability levels are welcome. I will tailor the class to the participants. If you have a project you want to work on I'll help you with it. Each participant can decide what they want to accomplish and I will help you acheive your goal. -- From learning the basics of working with clay to developing your own work -- The goal will be to have a good time in a non-threatening setting while working with clay. Come join the fun!

In November of 2010 I traveled to China as an invited lecturer during the International Magazine Editors Association Symposium. Organized by the Fuping Pottery Art Village, international attendees participated in the conference, traveled to pottery villages, visited ancient kiln sites, ceramic workshops and factories, and participated in the Longquan Celadon Festival. I will share a slide presentation with powerful images of this memorable journey. January 3, 2012 at 7:30 pm at the Alpineer in Crested Butte.

HOLIDAY NEWS FROM DONNA ROZMAN CERAMICS

     On Wednesday I will set up a table at the HOLIDAY MARKET at the Gunnison Arts Center. The Holiday Market will be open Wednesdays thru Sundays, Dec. 8th - Dec. 23rd. This year's Holiday Market will showcase the artwork of nine local artists. The artwork will range in price from $5 - $100. This is a great opportunity for holiday shoppers to purchase unique gifts and support local artists. I will be at GAC on Sunday, Dec. 11th from 1:30-3:30pm helping out with the Holiday Market as a volunteer.
     ALSO, I will have wall peices in the ONCE UPON A WINTER exhibition in the Alpenglow Gallery at Mountaineer Square in Mt. Crested Butte, Colorado. Opening reception - Thursday, Dec. 8, 6:00 pm-7:30 pm. Stop by and see this exciting exhibit.
     AND, I recently delivered work to the RIJKS FAMILY GALLERY in Crested Butte. Look for my new handpainted bowls with laser transfers of my original drawings in the center. Also, new mini bowls with flower patterns that make great ring holders, tea bag holder or dieter’s ice cream bowl!

Just couldn't resist taking a moment to take some photographs. I slipped on my husband's size 14 shoes, trekked out on our ice covered grass and snapped a few shots. Hope you enjoy the photo.

Hiking Fun

Fall colors are fading on Whetstone mountain. Richard and I enjoyed a hike this morning, it was twenty-two degrees out when we began our adventure at 7am. The sun came up over the peaks after about a half hour. The fallen aspen leaves created a golden carpet on our path. What a great way to begin our day!

After our early morning hike, I began the task of getting caught up with office work. I am in the midst of creating a powerpoint presentation for my upcoming convocation (lecture) at Western State College. Now it is time to get into the studio to work on a few special orders. I am also creating a bowl which I will donate to the silent auction for the fundraiser for Artists of the West Elks, our local visual arts organization.

Got home a week ago from the Mark Burleson workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass. It was a great experience -- I learned so much. Here are some images of the workshop. The above photo is of Mark, Andy Meyer, Julia Cardone and Ashley York. We all went on a hike on the Sunday in the middle of the two week workshop. Will post more images soon!! Hope everyone in the path of Hurricane Irene will be safe.

Today is day 4 of the Photographic Images for Ceramic Surfaces workshop with Mark Burleson at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado. We are working hard, creating laser toner transfers, silkscreens, etc. I just made a series of pentagons which will hang on the wall. Tomorrow I will "pull" a silkscreen and get it ready for printing. I have been working late in the studio which is open for use 24/7. I will share images soon.

New work for Arts Festival

Here is a sample of my new work just out of the kiln this week. It is a preview of what I will have available during the Crested Butte Arts Festival this weekend. Tomorrow afternoon I will set up my booth. I painted a new Donna Rozman Ceramics sign for the front of my canopy. Most of my boxes of pottery are packed and priced. Just need to finish up packing the most recent work. I am looking forward to showing my new work as well as my wildflower patterns. I am also getting ready to leave on Monday for a workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado. Snowmass is just 30 miles from my home as the crow flies. However, it will be a two and a half drive since there are no roads that go directly through the mountains from here to there. Well, there are some very rough 4WD roads but I am NOT taking any of those routes!!

Upcoming Crested Butte Arts Festival

One week until the Crested Butte Arts Festival. I am booth number 21 on the north side of Elk Avenue in front of Rozman Realty between 5th and 4th Streets. I am busy in the studio getting a couple of last firings done. Here are a few images of a fish platter in process. Tomorrow I'll get a few more flower mugs and mini bowls painted. Then I need to glaze a few more bowls and get them Painted. Then I will work on getting a couple of fish tile murals mounted.

The Fourth of July weekend was a busy one. Bob and Stephanie, Ryan and Emily were here for three days. Went to three barbecues, watched two fireworks displays, one in Crested Butte and the other put on by Mt. Crested Butte. It was a very nice weekend. After the weekend I spent long days in the studio handpainting pottery. Got a kiln load ready and fired yesterday. Unloaded today. All of this new work is going to the Boutique at the Wildflower Festival which will be at registration at the Crested Butte Community School. I will have a booth at AWEfest tomorrow, Sunday, 9am-3pm. Am scheduled to deliver the new work to the Boutique by 4pm tomorrow. Then on Monday I will be a guide for the wagon rides at the Wildflower Festival. The wagon rides will be a ride through the town of Crested Butte. Should be fun!!

Here are images of a couple of new pieces. Both bowls are about 14 inches in diameter. I used a transfer technique to get the center image, which is a scanned print of one of my drawings. Kebler Pass June 24

Drove over Kebler Pass to Paonia on Thursday, June 24. Picked up my work from the show at Glennie-Coombe Gallery. Left a couple of pieces in the Gallery. Here is a photo of the Gallery on main street in Paonia. Right next door is Ollie's Ice Cream Parlor. Always have to have ice cream when I am there!!!

On May 22 we had visitors -- Niece Alex Lunde and her husband Matt, niece Kelly Decker and her boyfriend, Joe, and nephew Nathan Trifone. It was fun to have them here. Got a great photo of Richard with Kelly and Alex. There was still alot of snow on Whetstone mountain when they were here.

Father's Day

Tomorrow is Father's day. Will spend time with my father at a BBQ at the Willows Annex, one of my many nicknames for the health care center where he and my mom reside. My twin cousin, Margie, is coming that day for a visit. It will be great to see her. I hope to manage to make the day special for my wonderful husband as well.

Spent the day yesterday preparing clay and then throwing some large bowls. Recently I have been doing some pencil drawings of mandala like designs inspired by nature. I hope to transfer these images to the large bowls that I am making.

Monday in the Mountains

Today I had a nice drive to Gunnison, Montrose, Delta, Paonia and home over Kebler Pass. (Shopping in Montrose followed by dental appointment in Delta.)The top of the pass still had lots of snow. As I topped the pass and began the descent the ground in the "triangle" was covered with snow. The road to Lake Irwin and the Ohio Pass road were snowed in. The road to the Irwin townsite had been plowed. It was a beautiful drive. -- Just posted this image of a platter that I recently completed.

Opening of Nueva Era

Teresa brought our parents, Mamie and Bill Sisson, to the opening reception for Nueva Era: Cartwheels. It was fun to have them there. They were able to see my new work on display in this group show at the Gunnison Arts Center. There was music in the courtyard and lots of people enjoying the evening. Great fun for all!

Currently, I have work in three group shows. "Amazing Colorado Women" is the title for the show at the Glennie-Coombe Gallery in Paonia, Colorado. The opening for the show was last Friday, May 27th. It was a lovely evening with great attendance. This show runs until June 23rd.

Tonight is the opening for "Nueva Era - Cartwheels" at Gunnison Arts Center, 5-8pm. There will be music in the courtyard and it is also First Friday Gallery Crawl. This show will be on display for the month of June.

The third show is in Denver. "A Ceramics Collaboration" is presented by Plinth Gallery and Anderson Ranch. This exhibition will showcase work by Colorado ceramic artists. The Opening Reception is tonight at Plinth Gallery 8520 Brighton Blvd., Denver from 5-10pm. On Saturday, June 11 there will be an Artist Reception, open Studio and Kiln Opening from noon-9pm.

Yes, it is still snowing here in beautiful Colorado! Spent Easter day with family and friends. Enjoyed excellent food and great company. The above bowl is roughly 14" in diameter. I trimmed the bottom of the bowl so that you can add a picture wire and hang the bowl on the wall. The above photo shows the bowl before it went into the kiln to be glaze fired.

Quilting

Here is a look at my new pasttime --- free-motion quilting. I am learning to use my regular sewing machine to do this interesting technique. It is challenging but really fun. Diana, Linda and I have been collecting purple fabrics for a couple of years. We all started on our purple quilt projects at the same time. I am making a series of 14" square wall hangings. This gives me plenty of practice at the free-motion quilting. Above are two of the squares that are completed.

I am so easily distracted. While busily painting a fish platter in the studio this afternoon, Richard came in to tell me that the owl that woke us up this morning was down by the river sitting on a fence post. I grabbed my camera and went to photograph it. Unfortunately, my camera did not have an SD memory card in it. So I had to go back to the house, grab the photo card, put it in the camera and get back outside before the owl flew away. I got a couple of quick snapshots from our driveway. Then I quietly walked down toward the river. I got close and took a couple of shots but he had his back to me. So I made a noise and he looked right at me so that I was able to get the above photo. Then he got tired of me and flew down river and landed in a willow tree. What fun!! Just had to post the photos before I go back to work in the studio.

Artstream celebrates 10 Years

It was fun to be in the exhibition space when Artstream Gallery celebrated their 10th Anniversary. This is a cake made to look like the Artstream Gallery. Congrats to Allegeny Meadows and Sam Harvey for the success of their mobile gallery!! -- I have been an avid viewer of the cake shows on television; e.g. Amazing Wedding Cakes, Ace of Cakes, etc. So I was delighted to see this COOL cake and be there for the cutting of the cake. I even got to taste a piece of cake. -- I remember the first time I saw the Artstream Gallery 10 years ago at NCECA. It was such a creative idea to convert an old Airstream Travel Trailor into a traveling gallery. I am always happy to see the Artstream and enjoy the amazing functional pottery that they have for sale.

So fun to see friends from grad school. In the photo - Les and Mika Laidlaw, Liz James, Nicole Copel and Donna Cole and myself at NCECA. We bribed a passerby to take this photo of us. There were more K-State folks at NCECA but did not get a chance to get them in a photo. One of the things that I like best about going to NCECA is seeing friends that I would otherwise not get a chance to see. I was sorry that Ester and Yoshi Ikeda were unable to be there. I did get to see Glen Brown and attend his lecture. And, of course, we saw Anna Calluori-Holcombe who was a co-laison for the conference.

Donna Cole and I were busy during the conference with registering volunteers, manning the volunteer counter and getting to some of the NCECA programming. So on Friday evening DC, Nicole Copel and I hired a driver to take us to the exhibition Frozen in Fire. DC had a piece in the show and we didn't want to miss it. We then had our driver take us to St. Pete's Beach for the Potters Council Show The Shoulders We Stand On at the Nancy Marcoe Gallery (I had a piece in that show). At the reception we ran into some friends that we met in Hungary at the International Ceramic Studio in 2006. (It is always great to get re-acquainted NCECA) This photo is of our group during that reception. The Potters Council celebrated its 10th Anniversary and the reception was well attended. Donna Cole, Nicole Copel and I walked over to the beach and watched the sun set on the Gulf. It was really beautiful.

NCECA 2011

I arrived in Tampa on Sunday, March 27th. Stayed at the Howard Johnson Plaza in downtown Tampa. Donna Cole and I came in a day early so that we could enjoy some calm before the storm. We were the NCECA Program Volunteer Coordinators for NCECA 2011 and had been working on matching volunteers with assignments since January. So on Monday we took time to enjoy Tampa before beginning our conference duties the next day. We had lunch at Channelside then were met by Barbara Pope (one of our volunteers who lives at St. Pete's Beach). Barbara drove us over to the beach and gave us the 10 cent tour of the beach town. At one point during the brief tour we exited the car and scurried to the water to dip our feet into the gulf! Afterward, Barbara dropped us off in the center of town. We happened upon a shell store and spent about an hour browsing around the store, both of us fascinated by the variety of shells. We left the store with our purchased shells and meandered along the avenue. Our next stop was a bead store. I was excited about finding beads for my new past time -- QUILTING!! So again we spent time browsing in yet another store. After purchasing some interesting beads we left the store only to find ourselves in the middle of a thunderstorm and downpour. We rushed to a coffee shop and took refuge there. We had a great visit with the other customers in the coffee shop. Ruthie, the owner of the coffee shop, recommended a driver who we contacted. Ron came to the coffee shop, picked us up, and drove us back to Tampa. The above picture is of Donna Cole and myself at St. Pete's Beach. More NCECA stories to come.

NCECA and Potter's Council Show

I am leaving in the morning for the NCECA Conference in Tampa, Florida. Can't wait for the warm weather. I love the snow, but this time of year it is fun to get a break from it. Just got a small piece out of the test kiln this morning. Just in time to show sisters, Linda and Laura. The test piece was a small bowl with layered colored slip. I tried a technique that I say in a video on Ceramic Arts Daily. It is a great technique for my terra cotta work. I taught it to my class at the Gunnison Art Studio. Simple process but can achieve very unique and interesting surface designs.

Tommy and BJ climb/ski Crested Butte

While BJ was visiting in January he and Tommy climbed to the top of Crested Butte and skied down. It is considered a run at the ski area. However, it is not for the faint hearted. You take the Silver Queen to the top, then transfer to the High Lift (t-bar) and make the rest of the climb from there. They took a beer and sandwich. It was windy and cold so they did not eat their sandwich at the top. However, they had time to take a few pictures which I am including in this blog.

October is here and winter is in the air. We have been lucky with some indian summer days this week. But as you can see we got some snow on the peaks recently. We are getting ready for winter, staining the deck, draining the hoses, putting furtilizer on the lawn, etc... I am also getting ready for my trip to China. Ordered a phrase book and friends loaned me a couple of other books on China. Am reading about the Terra Cotta Warriors now. Am looking for a good travel pillow for the flight over. Have a couple of long lay overs so it will be a tiring trip. However, I am getting very excited.

Diana Peacock was here for a week visiting. She was joined by her daughter Jenny Sova and grandson Ben. It was so fun to have a 3 year old in the house. We had a cook out last night. Grilled on the deck and had Tommy, Matt Peacock, Jane Pizem, Royal White, Teresa and Jos Rikjs and Richard and myself. Ben was our entertainment. He talked and talked. He made great friends with Royal. Today everyone left after breakfast.

September Splender

September is such a beautiful month. Gotta savor every splendid moment. Working on special orders in the studio. Taught my first clay class of the fall session at Gunnison Arts Center today. Working on getting my visa for my trip to China. --- I've been invited to speak at the International Ceramic Magazine Editors Association conference in Fuping, China. So I am working on the details for traveling there in November. More details later.

BJ visits

Yesterday we drove to Grand Junction to pick up BJ. He rode the train from Omaha. We spent the night in Delta and drove on in to Crested Butte today. Stopped in Paonia to visit Ed and Roger Rozman. We got to CB in time to meet my folks at the Brick Oven for Pizza. Pine Haven brought a group of their residents to the Brick for an outing. It was great fun for all. So nice to see Mom and Dad out and about.

Salida Riverside Art Festival

I had a booth in the Salida Riverside Art Festival the weekend of August 14 &15. It was fun to see friends and family. Met lots of the other vendors. My sister, Linda, came along and she was a great help. We drove the black truck over Monarch loaded up with the tables, shelves, tent and inventory. Got set up easily and had time Friday evening to sit by the river and watch some folks practicing kayaking. The Festival was on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday we got packed up in record time with the help of Dan Peacock. On the way home stopped by Pine Haven in Gunnison and visited our folks.

Ridgway Rendezvous Arts Festival

Just got back from the Ridgway Rendezvous. What a fun art festival they put on over there! It was in the town park on the grass. Booths were set up in clusters of four so each vendor had a corner booth. I liked the format. It was also nice to be on the grass. We had rain on Saturday, it began at about 3pm and rained the rest of the afternoon. However, we stayed dry under cover of the tent. Sunday it was sunny all day. My husband, Richard, and sister, Linda, were terrific helpers. The bulk of our sales occurred on Saturday. The music throughout the event was great. I met other vendors who do the art fair circuit. Fun to talk to them about their experiences. Met some fellow potters and got reaquainted with others. Nice to see some familiar faces and meet new people.

On the way home from Ridgway yesterday we stopped at the Creamery Art Center in Hotchkiss and I picked up my work from the "Comin' Round the Mountain" show that we had there.

All went well over the weekend. Had a great time at the CB Arts Festival. My booth display stayed up during the downpoor on Saturday with no damage. YEA! Sunday was a nicer day. Spent all day on both Monday and Tuesday in the studio getting more inventory painted for this weekend in Ridgway.

CB Arts Festival Demo

I will be doing a demo on Saturday at 10:30am at the Demo Tent in front of Kochevars at 2nd and Elk during the Crested Butte Arts Festival. My booth is at the other end of Elk Avenue. My sister, Linda will be at my booth during that time. The demo will last about 40 minutes. I plan to throw three or four bowls. I was pleased that the Festival send two strong young men to pick up my wheel, clay and tools today. They will have it ready for me at the Demo Tent on Saturday.

My boxes are all packed and ready to take up to the Festival. I will set up tomorrow afternoon. I am very happy to be on the street in front of Rudy's office. I will be able to store back up work in his office and use it as needed during the weekend. I won't be that lucky in Ridgway or Salida.

Crested Butte Art Festival

Phew!! Just finished a full day of handpainting pottery in preparation for the Crested Butte Art Festival this weekend. My booth is #3 and is on the north side of Elk Avenue approximately in front of Rozman Realty. My sister, Linda, arrives on Friday and will help me in my booth. It will be fun to have her here and I am happy to have the help.

AWEfest

I participated in AWEfest yesterday. There were 12 local artists who were part of the festival. We were located on Elk Avenue in Crested Butte just west of the Sunday Farmer's Market. It was a festive day. Lots of folks out and about. Enjoyed a day in the sun and sold some of my pottery. I always love the energy of an arts festival!!

Time to get back in the studio and make work!

Laura Elm and I drove over Kebler Pass to Hotchkiss on Monday. We began getting pedestals and shelves ready for out show at the Creamery Art Center. Spent the night in Delta. Got to the Creamery on Tuesday morning bright and early. Met Mary Jursinovic there and began the task of setting up our pottery show, Comin' Round the Mountain. Finished setting up the show by 4pm and drove to Paonia to the Glennie-Coombe Gallery, I picked up my work from my show there. They kept three pieces to show throughout the summer. Came back to Crested Butte over Kebler Pass, which was a gorgeous drive.

Today we drive back to Hotchkiss for the opening of the show. The reception is from 6-8pm at the Creamery Art Center. Hope to see you there.

ART rageous Day in Crested Butte

The Arts Alliance of the East River Valley will conduct "ART"Rageous, a day of the arts at the Center for the Arts in Crested Butte on Saturday, July 3rd.

There is something for everyone with a variety of activities including live arts demonstrations and a juried show in the Piper Gallery, the final performance of the Crested Butte Mountain Theatre's Guys and Dolls show, a special pops brass band performance offered by the Crested Butte Music Festival and a late evening concert with local favorite Tony Furtado.

Laura Elm and I will be demonstrating from 10am to 3pm at the Center for the Arts. Come by and join the festivities!!!

Scooby Doo Tuesday

Today was a fabulous day. I had breakfast on the deck sitting in the sunshine. Made a trip to Gunnison to Pine Haven, the old folks home, to visit the folks. We had a drink on the patio and a great visit. Papa loved the gazebo that we sat in to get out of the sun. He asked about the high white fence, I told it was there so that he couldn't escape. Put birdseed in their birdfeeders. Unfortunately, there is not good way to get Papa out to the birdfeeder. So he watches from the window in his room. They have two birdfeeders outside their window and the birds empty them about every other day.

I had a long day in the studio yesterday. Got many things handpainted for a firing on Thursday. Need to photograph some new shrines this evening. Sending work to the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival. It will be in their boutique during the Festival which is July 11 - 18. Stop by the registration area at Nordic Center if you are in CB.

Monday Monday

Monday morning got into the studio early. Spent a full day working in the studio -- glazing, painting, finishing some border tiles, etc. Yesterday made brunch for Richard for Father's Day. Then went to Gunnison for an ice cream social with my father at Pine Haven. Returned that evening and grilled steaks with Teresa and Jos on our deck.

Frosty summer morning

Woke up this morning to frost on the ground. The sun came out and warmed things up in time to have great weather for a doubles tennis game.

The bookmarks for Comin' Round the Mountains, our small group show at the Creamery Arts Center in Hotchkiss, Colorado arrived today. We will start distributing them asap. The show runs July 9 - August 9, with a reception on July 9.

Unloaded tiles for a couple of tile murals today. The tiles look great, now have to get them mounted and ready to display.

Black bears

Yesterday we got about a half inch of rain preceded by strong wind. This has been the windiest spring I can remember. Today we woke up to a dusting of snow on the peak of Whetstone mountain and a layer of fog half way down the mountain. It was beautiful. As Richard was having coffee at the breakfast table he spotted a black bear on "ski jump hill" across the meadow from our house. He called me and we watched it with the binoculars. As we were watching we spotted another one walking a short distance from the first. They quickly walked into the trees to reappear again 10 minutes later. We watched them for about a half an hour as they made their way down valley from our house.

In the studio today I painted fairy slipper flowers on tiles. I now have a kiln load and will fire tomorrow.

I spent a few minutes in the garden this evening. Some small critter is digging in my columbine garden. I covered the hole and will watch to see if there is more activity. Richard said it is not a gopher, which is the usual culprit.

Crazy Days of Summer

Summer arrived in Crested Butte this week. It is great. The mornings are really lovely. By later in the day it was a bit windy. Too windy to paint outside. However, it is great to have the warm weather, and the green leaves on the aspen trees. Whetstone mountain is really looking beautiful.

Work in the studio is going well. Painted a tile mural today. It is loaded in the kiln. Will fire later in the week. Tomorrow I hope to start some new projects. Looking forward to trying some of the interesting techniques show in the Pete Pinnell workshop last weekend.

Spent the weekend in Grand Junction at a Pete Pinnell workshop. Also, enjoyed the reception for the Contemporary Clay show at the Art Center there. Laura Elm and I both have pieces in the show. It was 100 degrees there! What a difference in climate for us.

Trying to remember to "Blog" regularly. This morning when I got up I saw a beaver in the river. He was happily chomping on willow branches. Got out for a run then into the studio. I am working on a tile mural for the upcoming show in Hotchkiss, Colorado.

Also, a couple of gals from the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival came by to look at my wildflower pottery. They want some for their store during the Wildflower Festival July 11th thru July 18th. They picked out mugs, platters, bowls and coasters with wildflowers painted on them.

Frogs and Hummers

Today as I was working in the studio I thought of a few things that I should write about in my blog. So I came up after I was finished opened my blog and now can't remember what was so important!! AHHHH! Now I remember! I fired my kiln today and opened the windows so that the studio did not get too hot. Alas, this is the first day of the year that I have worked with the windows open. Yes, it was warm enough today. I did have my music on but could still hear the frogs from the marsh down by the river and the hummingbirds trilling outside. Joyous sounds indeed. It was perfect as I was working on a tile mural in which I am featuring hummingbirds!

Just talked to Alex about my blog. She is trying to get me set up with a cool background. Should be fun! In the mean time, I will pack up work, and load the car. Getting ready for show in Paonia. Opens tomorrow. This morning I got together with Laura Elm. We designed a bookmark for our upcoming show at the Creamery Art Center in Hotchkiss. The show opens July 9th.

Unloaded teapots and dreamkeepers from the kiln yesterday. Ready for upcoming show in Paonia. Reception for the show is Saturday evening. Hope to see some familiar faces there. Richard will be branding cattle in the morning while I pack the car with my work for the show. Kebler pass opened yesterday and we'll head over that way for the two hour drive to Paonia. The show is at Glennie-Coombe Gallery on Main Street in Paonia.
